The term kernmantle is derived from the german words kern core and mantle cover. It has a static kernmantle construction and is heat resistance up to 930 f with a loss of strength at. Static ropes are designed to allow relatively little stretch which is most useful for applications such as hauling and rappelling. Static rope meets or exceeds nfpa 1983 requirements.

Common life safety or fall arrest ropes feature a twisted parallel strand core surrounded by a braided cover. Because if its 100 polyester composition this rope has very low stretch yet is high strength. The sheath is designed to generate some grab and friction for rappelling and lowering operations. They feature a tight 32carrier 40carrier or 48carrier cover to protect the core from any ingress of dirt or particles that might harm the core.
